When it comes to dressing for an interview, what color you wear can say a lot. Therefore, for you guys out there, picking out a tie may mean more than you think. It all comes down to what job or internship you are interviewing for and what colors you like.

Here is a breakdown of the rainbow that will help you choose what tie color to wear.

Red

This is one of the classier colors of the spectrum. If you want to draw attention to yourself, consider red as your tie color. According to business.tutsplus.com, "It's the color of energy and the symbol of life. It evokes strength, power, and creates a visual impact."

However, be careful about being too "out there." This color does show bravery but with it comes the connotation of aggression.

Orange

If the job you are interviewing for is not on the serious side, consider buying an orange tie. This color represents fun, warmth, and ambition. Orange is secondary to red regarding the need to stand out.

On the other hand, orange seems to be the most incompetent color. According to factscompany.com, "Orange, however, topped the CareerBuilder list for the worst color, with 25 percent of employers saying it was the color most likely to be associated with someone who is unprofessional."

Yellow

Like orange, yellow is considered to be a more approachable, friendly color. It is associated with sunlight, laughter, and optimism. This would be a great color tie to wear to an interview for a creative job.

Green

What do you think of when you see green? Money? Nature? These two concepts are most associated with the color. In addition, green comes across as a color of peace and generosity.

If you choose to wear a green tie, your interviewer will most likely be put at ease by your presence. Green also shows signs of growth and possibility.

Blue

This is one of the more professional colors; however, it depends on what shade of blue you choose. Naturally, a baby blue will not look serious at all. On the other hand, a royal or navy blue depicts intelligence, trust, and efficiency.

This is a great choice of color for interviews in the law or finance industry. According to factscompany.com, "Employers from the CareerBuilder survey recommended blue most often, with 23 percent of hiring professionals identifying it as their most preferred wardrobe color choice."

Purple/Pink

Like orange, purple is a risky color to wear to an interview. If your tie is purple or pink, you will most likely appeal to teenage girls rather than your interviewer. Obviously, these colors would set you apart from the other interviewees but to be on the safe side, do not wear them.

Black

Black happens to be the more appropriate color for management job interviews. It represents authority, sophistication, and strength. However, wear black smartly. Consider the color of your suit or shirt, as too much black can be overwhelming, or even arrogant to interviewers.

White

Not many people consider wearing a white tie, but it has proved to be effective to the eye. According to businessinsider.com, "Hiring managers think that white means you're 'organized' since any chaos at all and you may find yourself with a stain on that white outfit."

White is a nice contrast to dark colors in interviews and will make you stand out from others applying to the job.

Gray

Next to black and blue, gray sends a message of being reliable and wise. However, a gray tie is something hard to come by, let alone match to a suit. Therefore, do not break your back trying to wear gray to an interview.

On the other hand, gray has a more negative connotation than a positive one. It is also associated with depression and a lack of energy. Think about it. Sweatpants are usually gray, and when you wear sweatpants you have already given up.

Brown

Like orange, I recommend avoiding this color altogether. It is ugly and reminds people of … you know what. This color does not really fit any industry and relays to people that you are simple and slow to change.

Simple vs. Complex

Ties for interviews should be kept simple; you should avoid any crazy designs. Even if it is around Halloween or Christmas, a themed tie does not show any professionalism.
